BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

TEHRAN -- The novel coronavirus pandemic has claimed 24,118 lives in Iran as of Saturday, up by 166 new death cases overnight, Iran's health ministry said.

Iran's confirmed cases of the disease rose to 419,043 on Saturday, with registered 2,845 new patients in the past 24 hours, Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.

KUWAIT CITY -- Kuwait on Saturday reported 521 new COVID-19 cases and one more death, raising the tally of infections to 99,049 and the death toll to 581, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

Currently, 8,970 patients are receiving treatment, including 96 in ICU, according to the statement.

The ministry also announced the recovery of 722 more patients, raising the total recoveries in the country to 89,498.

NEW DELHI -- Health minister of Indian capital city Delhi Satyendra Jain said Saturday he felt there was community spread of COVID-19 and it should have been accepted by now.

"When cases are increasing on such a large scale in Delhi and other parts of the country, we should have accepted that there's community spread. I think we are stuck in technical terms here but only the Indian Council of Medical Research or the central government can comment on this," he said.

BEIJING -- Beijing Municipality reported one new imported asymptomatic case of COVID-19 on Saturday, the first of its kind reported since the city resumed direct international passenger flights earlier this month, authorities said.

The case was a 23-year-old Chinese native who was studying in Pakistan, Wang Quanyi, an official with the city's disease prevention and control center, said at a press conference.

CANBERRA -- Australia has confirmed fewer than 30 new cases of COVID-19 for the first time in recent months.

As of Saturday afternoon there had been 26,885 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Australia, and the number of new cases in last 24 hours is 24.

Of the new cases, Victoria, the hardest-hit state by the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, confirmed 21, which is the lowest number of new cases since June 24, when 20 cases were reported.

BEIJING -- China has eased restrictions on theaters and other performance venues, including raising the cap on audience numbers, as the COVID-19 epidemic has waned in the country.

Performing centers are now allowed to fill 75 percent of their operating capacity, the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism said in a statement.

TOKYO -- The confirmed COVID-19 cases in Japan increased by 601 to 78,782 as of Saturday evening, according to the latest figures from the health ministry and local authorities.

The figure excludes the 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined in Yokohama near Tokyo earlier in the year.
