SYDNEY -- Australia's central bank has lifted interest rates by 0.50 basis points (BPS) on Tuesday, bringing the new rate to 1.35 percent as the country continues to battle rising inflation.

The 0.50 percent increase marks the third consecutive month the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has lifted interest rates from their "emergency" level of 0.10 percent maintained through the pandemic. (Australia-RBA-Interest Increase)

WELLINGTON -- The Omicron subvariant BA.2.75 has been detected in New Zealand for the first time as the country recorded 9,629 new community cases of COVID-19 and 24 more deaths, the Ministry of Health said on Tuesday.

Analysis of whole genome sequencing has confirmed two cases in New Zealand with BA.2.75. Before testing positive for COVID-19, both cases had recently travelled to India, where this subvariant has been detected, the ministry said in a statement. (New Zealand-COVID-19)

TOKYO -- A typhoon made landfall in Japan's southwestern prefecture of Nagasaki on Tuesday morning, bringing with it torrential downpours and thunder amid unstable atmospheric pressure in eastern and northern parts of the country, the weather agency said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has warned that Typhoon Aere could trigger landslides, rough seas, flooding in low-lying areas as rivers breach their banks, as well as warning of thunder and lightning strikes. (Japan-Typhoon Aere-Landfall)
