5.6-magnitude earthquake strikes off Japan's Amami-Oshima Island

TOKYO, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 struck off Amami-Oshima Island in the southwestern Kagoshima prefecture on Tuesday, the country's weather agency said.

The temblor occurred at 5:12 p.m. local time off the coast of the Amami-Oshima Island at a very shallow depth, said the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Shaking measuring 4 on Japan's seismic scale of 7 was observed in Tokunoshima Town, Amagi Town, and Isen Town, Kagoshima Prefecture.

The quake's epicenter was located at a latitude of 27.8 degrees north and a longitude of 128.6 degrees east.

No tsunami advisory was issued.
