TOKYO, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, closing down 556.10 points, or 1.06 percent, from Tuesday at 51,961.98.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 27.10 points, or 0.77 percent, lower at 3,511.34.

Stocks were pressured as investors locked in gains after the Nikkei index surged more than 2,100 points over the past two trading days and closed at a record high the previous day.
